Sudan

The Eternal River Cruise from Aswan to Luxor (4 Days)

Experience the luxury and style of days gone by aboard the steamship Sudan. Built for King Fouad toward the end of the nineteenth century, this vessel has been lovingly restored to be the last of its kind to cruise the Nile. The charms of the Sudan were described in detail in Agatha Christie's 'Death on the Nile' and today, its authentic atmosphere still evokes images of Hercule Poirot pacing the decks. The Sudan is faithful to her origins with authentic fixtures and period furniture, rich woodwork, leather upholstery, brass bedsteads, panelled passageways and wooden decks, yet integrated with all the modern conveniences one would expect of a luxury river vessel.

Embark

Embark the ship in Aswan.

Day 1: Aswan

Board the Sudan in the morning and take some time to settle into your elegant cabin before a gourmet lunch on board. This afternoon, visit Philae Temple, one of the most important shrines of ancient Egypt and Nubia until 550AD when Justinian, the Byzantine Emperor, ordered it to be closed after a period of 4000 years of worship. The temple was later dismantled and rebuilt just south of Aswan to allow for the construction of the Aswan Dam. There will be free time to browse the markets of Aswan before returning to the ship for dinner. Tonight there will be an optional 'Sound and Light' show at Philae Temple.

Day 2: Aswan - Kom Ombo - Edfu - Esna

From Aswan, the Sudan travels 48km northwards to the temple of Kom Ombo, with its pillars resting grandly on the banks of the river. In ancient times, this was a favourite basking spot for crocodiles and the temple here was decicated to Sobek, the crocodile god. Lunch will be served back on board as you sail towards Edfu. In the afternoon there will be a visit to the temple at Edfu which was built in honour of the falcon-headed sky god, Horus. Finally, cruise to Esna, some 46km north of Edfu, where the ship will remain overnight.

Day 3 : Esna - Luxor

After passing through the lock at Esna, the ship navigates towards Luxor which lies approximately 60km to the north. Containing infinite treasures, the largest city of the Upper Egypt remains the symbol of economic strength and Egyptian wealth. After lunch on board, you will be taken ashore to visit the Temple of Karnak. This ancient city was built around 2000 years ago and today you are still able to see almost perfect illustrations made in honour of the Pharaohs and their Gods. There will be some free time for you to explore the city of Luxor before returning to the ship for dinner. Tonight you may wish to join an optional 'Sound and Light' show at Karnak.

Day 4 : Luxor - Disembarkation

It's an early start today as you head to the west bank of Luxor to visit the Valley of the Kings. This limestone valley is the site of the burial chambers of the great Pharoahs and powerful nobles of the 18th - 21st dynasties. The 63 temples of eternal life that line the valley include the tomb of Tutankhamen, which was only discovered in 1922. Your Egyptian journey comes to an end after this excursion. If you require further arrangements following the cruise, please contact our call centre staff, who will be happy to assist with your plans.
