Rembrandt van Rijn

North Spitsbergen - Arctic Spring 8 Day Cruise

The Rembrandt van Rijn was originally built as a herring lugger early in the last century. Measuring 49.50 metres in length, the vessel underwent a complete refurbishment in 2011 and can now comfortably accommodate up to 33 passengers. The vessel has a spacious buffet style restaurant, bar and simply furnished cabins. The vessel is well suited for expedition cruising offering good open deck viewing areas and the two inflatable rubber crafts (zodiacs) enable landing and wildlife viewing opportunities in otherwise inaccessible areas. Cruises on the Rembrandt van Rijn combine the breathtaking scenery of the Artic and North Atlantic Islands with unforgettable experiences including whale watching, observing the Northern Lights and meeting fascinating local communities.

Embark the ship in Longyearbyen.

Day 1: Longyearbyen

Arrive in Longyearbyen, the capital of Spitsbergen, where you may wish to visit the Svalbard Museum which holds an interesting collection on the history of Spitsbergen, the mining industry and polar exploration. Board the ship and settle into your cabin. The ship will set sail in the evening towards Trygghamna.

Day 2: Alkhornet

From Trygghamna walk to Alkhornet a large seabird cliff, where the birds are prospecting their breeding places. Below the cliffs you will find a den of Arctic Fox and Reindeer graze on the lush vegetation. Later visit a haul out place for Walrus at Poolepynten if sea conditions allows, or at Sarstangen.

Day 3: Fuglefjorden

Today the ship sails into Fuglefjorden with views of vitjodbreen and Birgerbukta, with breeding places for Great Skuas and good chances for bears. You will also visit Ytre Norskøya, a small island which was used for many years as a lookout point for Dutch whalers. There you can still follow their tracks to the summit of the island, passing excellent bird cliffs on the way.

Day 4: Raudfjord

Today the ship approaches Raudfjord situated on the north coast of Spitsbergen, a stunning fjord with spectacular glaciers. It is also a favourite with Ringed and Bearded Seal, has good seabird colonies and offers good chances for spotting Polar Bear and Beluga.

Day 5: Reindyrsflya

If sea-ice conditions allow, you may land on the northern-side of Reindyrsflya, the largest tundra area of Spitsbergen. The vast undulating plain is a good grazing area for reindeer and several species of waders also breed here. Alternatively you may land at Fuglesangen, where you can sit among the Little Auks.

Day 6: 14th of July Glacier

This morning the ship arrives at the 14th of July Glacier. Close by you will see a breeding site for Brünnich’s Guillemot, Razorbill and Puffin. The guano of these bird colonies, the southward exposure and the sheltered situation, give rise to a relatively rich vegetation with many species of flowering plants. In the afternoon the ship sails to Ossian Sarsfjellet, where you can observe the Kittiwakes and Brünnich’s Guillemots on the cliffs at close quarters. Alternatively you will visit Ny Ålesund, the northernmost permanently inhabited village in the world, a centre for polar research and a former starting point for many North Pole expeditions (Amundsen and Nobile for example).

Day 7: Gipsvika deep inside Isfjorden

In the morning the ship arrives at Bohemanflya an extensive tundra area with its own birdlife and spectacular geological formations along the coast. At Gipsvika deep inside Isfjorden you will go ashore near the majestic cliff of Templet. The areas is stunning with spectacular mountains eroded into shape in the sedimentary rock from the Upper Carboniferous created around 290 million years ago.

Day 8: Longyearbyen

After your final breakfast disembark the ship in Longyearbyen.
