Rembrandt van Rijn

North Iceland Aurora Borealis and Whales 4 Day Cruise

The Rembrandt van Rijn was originally built as a herring lugger early in the last century. Measuring 49.50 metres in length, the vessel underwent a complete refurbishment in 2011 and can now comfortably accommodate up to 33 passengers. The vessel has a spacious buffet style restaurant, bar and simply furnished cabins. The vessel is well suited for expedition cruising offering good open deck viewing areas and the two inflatable rubber crafts (zodiacs) enable landing and wildlife viewing opportunities in otherwise inaccessible areas. Cruises on the Rembrandt van Rijn combine the breathtaking scenery of the Artic and North Atlantic Islands with unforgettable experiences including whale watching, observing the Northern Lights and meeting fascinating local communities.

Embark the ship in Akureyri.

Day 1: Akureyri

Embark the ship in Akureyri at 16:00hrs and settle into your cabin. The ship will depart early evening and set sail northwards to the island of Grimsey. Late night arrival and anchor outside town. At night you might witness Aurora Borealis.

In the morning depending on weather conditions an attempt by zodiac will be made to land on the island of Grimsey. Take a guided walk across the Arctic Circle. There is a sign on the island which marks the coordinate 66,34 degree North. The Arctic Circle is the most northerly of the five major circles of latitude that mark maps of the Earth. After lunch on the ship, the ship departs towards the small town of Husavik. While sailing across Skjafandi Bay you might see whales. In the evening the ship arrives near Husavik and the ship will anchor outside the town.
