First built in 1976 as an oceanographic research vessel for the Royal Dutch Navy and named "Hr. Ms. Tydeman", the Plancius has now been fully reconstructed as a 110-passenger vessel suitable for Polar expeditions. The vessel offers a restaurant/lecture room and a spacious observation lounge (with bar) with large windows, offering a full panorama view. All cabins are generously proportioned and are outside facing, mostly equipped with two bunk beds and a comfortable private bathroom.

Transfer by bus from Hotel Reykjavik Centrum, Reykjavik to the ship in Akureyri where you will embark the ship.

The striking landscape is particularly beautiful here, especially during autumn when the Dwarf Willow and Dwarf Birch change colour. In the evening the ship will sail through the fjord towards Scoresby Land where you will observe the contrast between the warm autumnal colours of the vegetation on shore, backed by huge dark mountains, and the cold blue of the icebergs.

Day 5: Sydkap

As the ship sail towards Sydkap in Scoresby Land in the morning, you will observe huge icebergs measuring some over 100 metres high and more than a kilometre in length. You will land near Sydkap to view the remains of the Thule culture winter houses, where as many as 20 people lived in these tiny houses, hunting Greenland Whale and using their vertebrae to build the houses.

Day 6: Ittoqqortoormiit

In the morning you will land at a lagoon on the south coast of Jameson Land, an area with waders and geese collecting for the autumn migration. The landscape here is gently undulating. Musk Oxen and Collared Lemming - survive on the meagre vegetation. In the afternoon you will visit Ittoqqortoormiit, the largest settlement near Scoresbysund with about 400 inhabitants.
