Polar Circle - Antarctic Peninsula 12 Day Cruise

First built in 1976 as an oceanographic research vessel for the Royal Dutch Navy and named "Hr. Ms. Tydeman", the Plancius has now been fully reconstructed as a 110-passenger vessel suitable for Polar expeditions. The vessel offers a restaurant/lecture room and a spacious observation lounge (with bar) with large windows, offering a full panorama view. All cabins are generously proportioned and are outside facing, mostly equipped with two bunk beds and a comfortable private bathroom.

Embark the ship in Ushuaia.

Day 1: Ushuaia

Arrive in Ushuaia this afternoon and embark the Plancius. Set sail through the Beagle Channel.

Days 2-3: Cruising Drake Passage

Set sail across Drake Passage. When you cross the Antarctic Convergence, arrive in the circum-Antarctic up welling zone. In this area you may see some Wandering Albatrosses, Grey Headed Albatrosses, Black-browed Albatrosses, Light-mantled Sooty Albatrosses, Cape Pigeons, Southern Fulmars, Wilson's Storm Petrels, Blue Petrels and Antarctic Petrels. Near the South Shetland Islands, spot your first icebergs.

Days 4-9: Hannah Point - Deception Island - Cuverville Island - Crystal Sound, Polar Circle

Day four may start in Antarctica with a landing at Hannah Point, where you will find a variety of Gentoo Penguins, Chinstraps and southern Giant Petrels, as well as Elephant Seals hauling out on the beach. Land at Deception Island, a sub ducted crater, which opens into the sea, creating a natural harbour for the ship. Here you will find hot springs, an abandoned whaling station, thousands of Cape Pigeons and many Dominican Gulls, Brown and South Polar Skuas and Antarctic Terns. Wilson's Storm Petrels and Black-bellied Storm Petrels nest in the ruins of the whaling station in Whalers Bay. The Plancius sails further south to the Orne Islands, home to large colonies of Chinstrap Penguins and a beautiful view across the Gerlache Strait, or to Cuverville Island, a small precipitous island, nestled between the mountains of the Antarctic Peninsula and Danco Island. It contains a large colony of Gentoo Penguins and breeding pairs of Brown Skuas. In Neko Harbour and Paradise Bay, with its myriad icebergs and deep cut fjords, you will have the opportunity to set foot on the Antarctic Continent. There will also be time for some zodiac cruising between the icebergs in the inner parts of the fjords. Continue your journey and sail through the spectacular Lemaire Channel to Petermann Island, offering a chance to see the Adelie Penguins and Blue-eyed Shags. The Plancius will also attempt a landing at Pleneau Island with Elephant Seals and a good chance of spotting Humpback, Minke and Fin Whales. Cruise south, along the Argentine Islands to Crystal Sound, which is situated to the south of the polar circle. The landscape is very impressive with very high mountains and huge, imposing glaciers.

Days 10-11: Cruising Drake Passage

As the Plancius cruises through the waters of Drake Passage watch out for the many species of seabirds.
