Antarctic Basecamp - 12 Day Cruise

First built in 1976 as an oceanographic research vessel for the Royal Dutch Navy and named "Hr. Ms. Tydeman", the Plancius has now been fully reconstructed as a 110-passenger vessel suitable for Polar expeditions. The vessel offers a restaurant/lecture room and a spacious observation lounge (with bar) with large windows, offering a full panorama view. All cabins are generously proportioned and are outside facing, mostly equipped with two bunk beds and a comfortable private bathroom.

Embark the ship in Ushuaia.

Day 1: Ushuaia

Arrive in Ushuaia and embark the Plancius this afternoon. Ushuaia is within the Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, and is the most southerly city in the world, located in the shadow of the Andes and right at the Beagle Channel shore. Set sail and cruise through this scenic waterway during the afternoon.

Days 2-3: At Sea

Today you set sail across the Drake Passage. When you cross the Antarctic Convergence you will arrive in the circum-Antarctic up welling zone. In this area you may see Wandering Albatrosses, Grey Head Albatrosses, Black-browed Albatrosses, Light-mantled Sooty Albatrosses, Cape Pigeons, Southern Fulmars, Wilson’s Storm Petrels, Blue Petrels and Antarctic Petrels. Near the South Shetlands Islands, you will spot your first icebergs.

Days 4-9: Antarctic Peninsula

The ship will sail directly to 'High Antarctica', passing the Melchoir islands and the Schollaert Channel. Continue to the Neumayer Channel where the groups basement will be positioned. The surrounding protected waters around Wiencke Island will become your playground for all activities. There will be great opportunities to explore the region on foot, zodiac or during kayak trips. You can also enjoy hikes near the shorelines and challenging mountain climbs further inland. After sailing through the Neumayer Channel, visit the research station, now a museum and the post office at Port Lockroy. Close to Port Lockroy you may also sight Gentoo Penguins and Blueyed Shags, seals and whales. There are great opportunities to go kayaking and camping here if weather conditions are right. Later the ship will sail through the Lemaire Channel to Planeau, Booth Island and Petermann Island where you will be able to observe Adelie Penguins and Blue-eyed Shags. It is also a good area for sighting Minke Whales and Humpback Whales. Glacier walks and kayaking activities will be available. Set foot on Neko Habour, an epic landscape of giant glaciers and wind-carved snow. In Paradise Bay you have the chance to make camp like a true explorer enjoying a supreme overnight Antarctic adventure, surely a highlight of the trip! On your last day the ship passes the Melchior Islands towards Half Moon Island before heading towards the Drake Passage.

Days 10-11: At Sea

As you cruise along the Drake Passage watch out for the seabirds and absorb the information provided by your on-board guides.

Day 12: Ushuaia
