Weddell Sea - Emperor Penguin Voyage incl helicopters

The ice-strengthened 'Ortelius' vessel has been cleverly refurbished to provide Polar expedition cruises in the Artic and Antarctica. Travellers have the opportunity to explore remote locations including Franz Josef Land and the Ross Sea, and observe an abundance of wildlife. The vessel can accommodate up to 100 passengers offering comfortable cabins, two restaurants, a bar/lecture room and sauna. Voyages on the Ortelius provide quality exploratory wildlife programs, spending as much time as possible ashore.

Embark the ship in Ushuaia.

Day 1: Ushuaia

Arrive in Ushuaia and embark the Ortelius this afternoon. Ushuaia is within the Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, and is the most southerly city in the world, located in the shadow of the Andes and right at the Beagle Channel shore. Set sail and cruise through this scenic waterway during the afternoon and sail the mountain-fringed Beagle Channel for the remainder of the evening.

Days 2-3: At Sea

Today you set sail across the Drake Passage. When you cross the Antarctic Convergence you will arrive in the circum-Antarctic up welling zone. In this area you may see Wandering Albatrosses, Grey Head Albatrosses, Black-browed Albatrosses, Light-mantled Sooty Albatrosses, Cape Pigeons, Southern Fulmars, Wilson’s Storm Petrels, Blue Petrels and Antarctic Petrels. Near the South Shetlands Islands, you will spot your first icebergs.

Days 4-7: Weddell Sea - Emperor Penguin colony - Snow Hill Island

Today the ship will sail into the Weddell Sea and if the Antarctic Sound is accessible and the ice does not prevent us to sail further, you might view the huge tabular icebergs that announce your arrival to the eastern side the Antarctic Peninsular. If conditions are favourable an Antarctic Continent landing at Brown Bluff will be made. Helicopter rides are a great contribution to the voyage and allows you to view land only rarely seen from the air. The scenery is magnificent with landscapes of lava flows and glaciers tumbling into the sea and icebergs in every direction. You will sight Adelie Penguins, Snow and Giant Petrels. If conditions allow the ship will sail further into the Weddell Sea area visiting Devil Island and Gourdin Island home to a colony of Adelie Penguins. Sail north through the Antarctic Sound looking out for Emperor Penguins on the ice-floes.

Day 8: Deception Island

In the morning the ship sails to Deception Island where you will have your last landing of the voyage at Pendulum Cove or Whalers Bay. At noon the ship will depart for the Drake Passage.

Days 9-10: At Sea

Spend the next two days at sea as the ship sails the Drake Passage. You will again have the chance to see many seabirds and be to take advantage of the knowledge of the lecture team.

Day 11: Ushuaia

Arrive in Ushuaia this morning and disembark the Ortelius.
