Mahabaahu

8 Day Assam Cruise (Upstream)

The Mahabaahu is an expedition style ship with luxurious enhancements, offering a very comfortable way to traverse the mighty Brahmaputra River and all it has to offer - including wild elephants and buffalos, one-horned rhinos and exotic birdlife. There are 26 spacious cabins and excellent amenities including a sun deck, swimming pool, spa, hair salon, jacuzzi, steam room, sauna, bar and games room. Meet representative at Guwahati Airport for your transfer to the ship in Pandu Port via the Kamakhya Temple .

Day 1: Guwahati

Meet your representative at Guwahati Airport where you will board vehicles for a transfer to the Kamakhya Temple. The Kamakhya Temple in Assam symbolizes the "fusion of faiths and practices" of Aryan and non-Aryan elements in Assam. Animal sacrifices take place here almost every day. From here, drive to ‘Pandu Port’ and board your ship and settle into your cabin. You will be given a safety briefing followed by a Welcome Dinner.

Day 2: Sailing the Brahmaputra

Start the day with a relaxing Yoga session and an interesting talk on Assam tea. The ship heads towards an island that is occupied predominantly by a ‘Bangla’ speaking Muslim community who are involved in extensive farming. Return to the ship for lunch and sail towards the Orang Point. Evening sets in and over a cup of tea enjoy a talk on 'The River Brahmaputra and the tribal life’. The ship will moor at a deserted island for the evening where you may enjoy a bonfire and a bbq.

Day 3: Silghat

After a yoga session and breakfast there will be a short talk on the Kaziranga and wild life in India’. Enjoy a leisurely morning cruise to Silghat. . After lunch sit through a talk on ‘Tea, Jute and Silk in Assam’. Take a short drive to a tea estate and enjoy a nature walk to this verdant undulating tea garden that straddles on the bank of the river Brahmaputra. Witness the ‘bagania’ women plucking the tea leaves. (The tea factory is not operational from mid-December to mid-February as it is time for pruning the tea bushes). The Jute mill is the bread and butter of 600 local workers and runs in three shifts; one can see the complete process of producing gunny bags from the Jute fibre. By sunset return to the ship to enjoy a cultural evening followed by dinner and then to retire early for the next morning’s elephant safari.

Day 4: Kaziranga National Park

Rise early for a once-in-a-lifetime elephant-backed safari where you will search for the elusive rhinoceros and tiger. Designated as a World Heritage site by UNESCO, Kaziranga National Park is located in the flood plains on both sides of the Brahmaputra. The park is home to over 180 mammals including tiger, deer, bison, elephants and a rich variety of birds. Breakfast will be taken at a resort in Kaziranga followed by a drive on to Bagori, the Western Range of Kaziranga, where open jeeps are lined up to take you on a wild life adventure of this magnificent park. Return to the ship for lunch followed as the ship sails towards Bishwanath Ghat. Walk through the village and are struck by the simplicity of life while the weaver women surround us with their silk and cotton weaves. Return to the ship for an evening on a deserted island followed by dinner.

Day 5: Bishwanath - Majuli

Enjoy a relaxed breakfast over a talk about life on the River Brahmaputra. Proceed for a boat safari where you may view roof turtles on protruding drift wood, water lizards, otters, elephants, wild buffaloes, rhinos, darters, herons, pied kingfishers, white throated kingfishers, serpent eagles and many more. (The sightings are determined by the weather conditions) Return to the ship for lunch. In the evening enjoy the Chef’s Cooking Demonstration and sample the snacks. Spend the evening on a deserted island with bonfire.

Day 6: Mishing Village

Yoga enthusiasts enjoy an early morning session as the ship sails towards the Mishing Village. The Mishings live on the bank of river in 'Chang Ghars' -houses with raised platforms. All Mishing women are expert weavers. Here you can buy ethnic colourful weaves and observe a dhoti tying and Mekhela Chaadar wearing demonstration. Later return to the ship for a talk on ‘Sibsagar and the Ahom civilization’ and proceed to get ready for a Traditional Assamese evening.

Day 7: Majuli - Nimati - Sibsagar

After a morning yoga session, enjoy breakfast as the ship sails towards Neamati Ghat followed by a talk and orientation on 'Majuli the seat of Neo –Vaishnav Culture’. Later a drive takes you to a scenic corner of a Satra (Monastery) for an interesting cultural performance by Satriya singers and dancers. Continue to Kamlabari Satra to witness the Vaishnavite priests dancing to the rhythm of cymbals, drums and chanting in the temple premise. Return to the ship for lunch and later enjoy a scenic drive through the countryside to reach Sibsagar, the ancient city, built around a huge man made water tank ordered by the Ahom queen. The Shiva Dol, constructed in the year 1734 is believed to be one of the highest Shiva temple in India. You will also visit Talatal or Kareng Ghar which was the palace of the Ahom Kings and Rang Ghar which was a place for hosting wrestling bouts and buffalo fights and other entertainment. Return to the ship for dinner.

Day 8: Nimati - Sibsagar

The morning is yours to enjoy, Yoga, bird-watching or perhaps an early morning indulgence in the spa. After breakfast you will disembark and drive to the Jorhat airport en-route stopping at a tea Estate to enjoy a traditional Assamese early lunch.

Disembark

Disembark the ship and transfer to Rowriah Airport in Jorhat in the afternoon.
