La Bella Vita

Classic Italy Cruise from Mantua to Venice (7 Days)

La Bella Vita is a luxurious 20 passenger, 3 deck hotel barge, which has been completely refurbished with opulent decor, to create a stunning ship perfectly placed for cruising some of Italy’s most charming waterways between Venice and Mantua. With a large sundeck, gourmet cuisine, fine wines and comfortable air conditioned cabins this barge is the ideal choice for your Italian cruise.

A local transfer to the barge is included. The designated meeting point is at the Laguna Palace Hotel at Mestre near Venice’s Marco Polo Airport. Alternatively guests staying in Venice prior to the cruise and not wishing to travel to Mestre can be picked up from the yellow information kiosk at Piazzale Roma near Venice Railway Station.

Day 1: Mantua

Please note that this is a sample itinerary and may be subject to change. On alternate weeks, the cruise may run in the opposite direction. You will be met at the designated meeting point and transferred to the barge moored in Porto Catena in Mantua. A Prosecco welcome offers the chance to meet the crew before an early evening cruise around the lakes surrounding the city. Your first gourmet dinner will be taken on board La Bella Vita tonight.

Day 2: Mantua - Governolo

This morning you will enjoy a guided tour of Mantua, once home to the poet Virgil, artists Mantegna and Donatello and under the Lordship of the powerful Gonzaga Family. Mantua's origins are early Etruscan but today it is a centre of extraordinary neo-classical and baroque architecture portrayed in the 14th century Ducal Palace housing some 15 gardens and courtyards, a museum, basilica and theatre.

Day 3: Governolo - Zelo

Your day begins with a canal cruise from Governolo along the Bianco Canal to Bosaro, past villages and farmsteads. In the afternoon there will be a guided excursion to the Renaissance city of Ferrara, including a visit to the 14th century Estense Castle. This ancient ducal fortress boasts a moat, drawbridges, unusual battlements and towers and houses marble balconies and sumptuous apartments.

Day 4: Zelo - Taglio di Po

Today you can enjoy a cruise from Zelo to Taglio di Po where you will visit the magnificent Renaissance gardens and wine cellars of the 17th century Villa Widmann-Borletti to enjoy a private tasting. For more than 1000 years wine, balsamic vinegar, organic Carnaroli rice, grape seed oil and truffles have been produced on the Dominio di Bagnoli estate and concerts, opera and art exhibitions are regular features in this magnificent property.

Day 5: Taglio di Po - San Pietro in Volta

Today the barge will cruise to Porto Levante passing through a nature reserve with flamingos, the occasional heron, snipe and other wildfowl. Take a tour of the ancient city of Chioggia and learn about its links to the Roman, Etruscan and Byzantine eras. Visit the Piazzatta Vigo, Vigo Bridge, 12th century Vigo column and the Church of San Domenic where you can see Carpaccio’s St Paul as well as works of art by Tintoretto and Bassano. Chioggia’s cathedral boasts works by Tiepolo, Giovane, Piazzetta and Diziani. A visit to the colourful fresh fish market completes your tour.

Day 6: San Pietro in Volta - Venice

This morning La Bella Vita cruises into Venice, passing Pellestrina which separates the Venetian Lagoon from the Adriatic Sea, along the Canal of the Orphans passing lagoon islands with their ancient monasteries, painted fishing boats and tiny churches. Moor on the waterfront near St Marks, disembark for a guided walking tour, discovering some hidden parts of the city of Venice: the gardens of the Biennale Exhibition of Modern Arts, Palladio’s Church of San Pietro in Castello, the Naval Museum with a model of the Bucintoro (Doge’s Boat) and the Pavilion of Gondolas housing Peggy Guggenheim’s own vessel. Tonight you are invited to the Captain's Farewell Dinner on board and you may wish to take an evening stroll through magnificent St Marks Square.
