Champagne Tour from Chateau Thierry to Reims

The six passenger Johanna was converted in 2013 into a luxury hotel ship furnished in a contemporary style, full of light and views of its surroundings. The Johanna has three cabins with en-suite bathrooms, a spacious living room with lounge, a gallery kitchen and a large sundeck offering comfortable and relaxing cruises on the rivers and canals of France and Belgium. The Johanna itineraries offer themed cruises in Belgian and cover the Upper Loire regions, the Champagne region, the Somme Valley and a 14 Day cruise from Bruges to Paris where guests can immerse themselves in the history, culture and natural surroundings. The barge has six bicycles on board which allow you to explore the region and enjoy cycling the canal paths which run parallel to your cruise routes. Cycling maps and a mobile GPS are also available. Guests can enjoy daily delicious meals using fresh local ingredients prepared by your onboard chef and served with a selection of Belgian beers and French wines.

Embark the ship in Chateau Thierry.

Day 1: Chateau Thierry

Arrive in Chateau Thierry and board the luxury hotel barge, Johanna. Settle into your cabin and meet your fellow guests. Later enjoy your first dinner on board.

Day 2: Chateau Thierry

Today enjoy the Picardie region, following the meandering Marne river. Three kilometers to the west is the WWI American Monument and some twelve kilometers north west is the Belleau Wood memorial site. From Dormans to Chateu Thierry, there is a nice cycling route along the north side of the river. At the south side, the champagne route makes a small detour to Conde-en-Brie with it’s historic castle, halles, church and old washing facilities and certainly worth a visit.

Day 3: Dormans

Today you will sail on the river Marne with the vineyards visible above you. Cycling above the river, crossing the quiet villages of Villers-sous Châtillon, Châtillon-sur-Marne, Verneuil or Vincelles, you might even spot the Johanna on her journey down the river.

Day 4: Epernay - Cumières

Today Johanna sails to Epernay, capital city of the Champagne region and situated in the heart of the vineyards. Epernay is the centre point for all your excursions in the Marne Valley and surrounding areas and is home to all the major Champagne houses. Don’t forget to visit Hautvillers where Dom Perignon invented the bubbly drink. Many small champagne houses welcome you for a personal tasting in a family environment, presenting you very special wines, standing out from the big mass production houses.

Day 5: Condé-sur-Marne

Today the barge sails on the Aisne-Marne canal. The Johanna will journey through the tunnel of Mont de Billy and eight locks before arriving in Conde-sur-Marne. 2017 itinerary offers an optional excursion to Chalons-en-Champagne.

Day 6: Sillery

The barge arrives at the nearby port of Sillery. From here you can explore the region by bike on a small tour from Reims to Sillery via the villages of Rilly-la-Montagne, Mailly-Champagne and Verzenay. 2017 itinerary will sail to the tunnel of Billy-le-Grand, followed by a guided tour of the vineyards of Reims mountains to the Phare de Verzenay.
