Journeys in the Land of Ice and Fire 8 Day Cruise (West and North Cruise from Akureyri)

The latest addition to the Variety Cruises fleet is the elegant motor yacht Callisto. Recently renovated this sophisticated boutique category cruiser offers the highest standard of accommodation, comfort and safety. The cabins and public areas are cosy and welcoming decorated in wooden furnishings, brass, antiques and fine works of art. The yacht amenities include a lounge/bar and dining room as well as a cosy library located on the Sun Deck. The yacht features two broad Sun Decks for sunbathing and the swimming platform on Callisto’s stern enables you to swim off the ship when in sheltered bays.

Day 1: Akureyri

Embark the Callisto in Akureyri this afternoon between 3pm-4pm. Meet your fellow passengers and crew at a Welcome Cocktail followed by dinner. Overnight in port and time for an optional late afternoon walking excursion in Akureyri.

Day 2: Akureyri - Husavik

Today you may join a full day excursion to Husavik. You will visit the lake Myvatn, namarksard and dimmuborgir, all fine examples of the volcanic world with lava fields, boiling and steaming mud pools, steam vents and craters. After lunch continue on the ring road to reach Godafoss waterfall - the falls of the gods - and will hear about the kristni saga, recounting the arrival of Christianity and the end of paganism. Rejoin the Callisto in Husavik and will spend some time walking around this colorful port. Overnight in port. **2018 cruises will visit Lake Myvatn, Namarksard and Dimmuborgir, all fine examples of the volcanic world with lava fields, boiling and steaming mud pools, steam vents and craters. Rejoin the Callisto in Husavik.

Day 3: Siglufjordur

This morning the ship will sail through the Skjafandi Bay to Siglufjordur. As always your Captain will inform you of whales’ sightings. At midday arrive at Iceland's most northern city, Siglufjordur. The city is situated very close to the arctic circle and possibly the most picturesque port of Iceland. Join an optional walking tour through the city will take you to the port, the herring museum, the folk music center housed in Madame house, the oldest house in the city. In the afternoon, sail for Isafjordur.

Day 4: Isafjordur

Arrive at Isafjordur, a large fishing port in Wesfjords. Today you may join an optional excursion to Bolungravik and then to Osvor town where you will visit a restored fisherman's hut. Return to the town and visit the maritime museum and walk around the town known for its rich cultural heritage and merchant's homes dating from the 18th century. Overnight at Isafjordur.

Day 5: Bildudalur

This morning you may join an optional excursion from Isafjordur to Bildudalur. The Callisto sails -without passengers who are joining the excursion - to Bildudalur. On the optional excursion, stop by the Dynjandi Waterfalls before reaching Bildudalur and visiting the town and the Sea Monsters Museum (Rejoin the Callisto in port). Sail South after lunch and cruise around the Westford coast line and sail past the Latrarbag cliffs which rise 450 m over the sea.

Day 6: Borgarnes (2018 Akranes)

Reach Borgarnes and disembark by tenders for an optional full day excursion to Deildartunguhver, Europe’s most powerful thermal spring, to the Hraunfossar and Barnafoss waterfalls area. Stop in Reykholt which was at one time one of the intellectual centre of the island and had for many years one of the most important schools of the country. Here lived and died in the middle ages one of the most important persons in Icelandic history: Snorri Sturluson, a famous poet and politician whose records of the old Norse language and mythology of medieval Iceland are invaluable to modern scholars. Remains of his farm and a bathroom with hot pot and a tunnel between the bath and the house can still be visited. In the afternoon rejoin the ship and sail to Westfjords. Overnight at sea to Heimaey - Westmann Islands. *2018 cruises arrive in Akranes for an optional excursion to Deildartunguhver, Europe's most powerful thermal spring, to the Hraunfossar and Barnafoss waterfalls area. Stop in Reykholt which was at one time one of the intellectual centers of the island.

Day 7: Heimaey Island (2018 Reykjavik)

The ship arrives at Heimaey island in the morning where you will discover a community which almost disappeared during a 1973 eruption that buried 400 homes and create a mountain. Heimaey is also known as the Pompeii of the north and you may join an optional half day excursion taking you to two volcanoes and the Eldheimar geological museum to understand what happened in 1973 and to other sites around the island. Depart Heimaey in the afternoon and cruise to Reykjavik. Overnight at sea. *2018 cruises - Morning sailing and arrival in Reykjavik. All day optional excursion in Reykjavik city before leaving to enjoy a panoramic tour to the volcanic Reykjanes Peninsula. Vikingaheimar, and the geothermal fields of Krysuvik.
