Embark

Embark the ship in Rio de Janeiro.

Day 1: Rio de Janiero

Join L'Austral in Rio de Janeiro, in the early evening. There will be time to settle in to your stateroom before your first gourmet dinner on board tonight.

Day 2: Paraty

Arrive at the beautiful colonial town of Paraty and step back in time as you wander the traffic free streets lined with exquisite examples of colonial architecture. The town has a wonderful cosmopolitan feel due to the large number of writers, artists and chefs that have settled here and of course in turn you will find great galleries, shops and restaurants. Join an optional excursion exploring the town on foot or by taking a scenic schooner tour along its crystalline water, perfect for swimming and snorkelling. Paraty is surrounded by lush rain forest vegetation and there are a number of beautiful beaches nearby.

Days 3-4: At Sea

Spend the next two days at sea as the ship sails towards Salvador.

Day 5: Salvador de Bahia

Today the ship arrives at the colourful and thriving city of Salvador de Bahia. Explore the beautiful and historical Pelourinho district laden with fine examples of 17th and 18th century architecture and richly adorned churches. Enjoy the district's artsy cultural scene by day and the carnival atmosphere by night where the lively bars, restaurants and clubs spill out into the cobbled streets. You can join a number of optional excursions exploring key sights and attractions in the city.

Day 6: At Sea

Spend the day at sea as the ship sails north towards Recife.

Day 7: Recife

Arrive at the smart and cosmopolitan city of Recife, located in Brazil's northeast state of Pernambuco. You will find sweeping beaches backed with glassy high-rise apartment blocks and a bustling historic quarter. Explore the city or join an optional excursion to its neighbouring town of Olinda. Founded in 1537, Olinda is one of Brazil's colonial gems. The steep, unevenly cobbled streets, the immaculate colourful colonial houses, the sobrados with wrought-iron balconies, and austere convents flanked by richly decorated Baroque churches earned it UNESCO World Heritage site status.

Day 8: At Sea

Spend the day at sea as the ship sails towards Fernando de Noronha.

Day 9: Fernando de Noronha

Arrive at Fernando de Noronha, an archipelago made up of 21 islands and islets, 220 miles off the coast of Brazil. The largest of the islands is a protected national marine park and ecological sanctuary with a rugged coastline and impressive ecosystems. You will find incredible white sand beaches and marine rich waters ideal for scuba diving and snorkeling.

Days 10-13: At Sea

Spend the next four days at sea as the ships sails towards Maio Island, Bijagos.

Day 14: Maio Island - Formosa Island, Bijagos

Arrive at Maio Island, part of the Bijagos archipelago which consists of around 88 islands and islets. The island is set in calm water and beautiful white sandy beaches backed by lush green vegetation. At Maio, still called Chediã, you can meet the Bissagos people and get to know their ancestral ways and customs. You will then continue to the island of Formosa. The island has a protected marine park where you can observe the residents of its crystalline waters and coastal mangroves. Your stopover in Formosa will also introduce you to the Bissagos peoples and their ancestral way of life, in perfect harmony with nature.

Days 15-16: Caravela Island, Bijagos

Spend the next two days at Caravela Island. Situated off the west African coast of Guinea-Bissau, the Bissagos archipelago rolls out its 88 islands and islets of black rock and white sand in the heart of the Atlantic. Declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1996, this string of isletsᅠhas exceptionally rich land and sea fauna.
