Canal du Midi Cruise from Marseillan to Argeliers (7 Days)

The Athos is a unique hotel barge offering luxury cruises on the South's of France's Canal du Midi. From the moment you step aboard for the Champagne Reception, the resident crew will attend to your every need. A journey on board the Athos is an unforgettable experience featuring exceptional cuisine, fine French wines and daily excursions through the scenic and historic Canal du Midi.





You will be met at the designated meeting point and transferred to boat in Marseillan.

Day 1: Marseillan

Please note that this is a sample itinerary only and is subject to change. On alternate weeks, the cruise operates in the opposite direction. You will be met at the local station and transferred to the Athos, moored in Marseillan. A full-crew Welcome Aboard follows, with Champagne and Mediterranean canapés. Once you are settled into your cabin, you will be invited to a 4-course dinner, prepared by the highly acclaimed onboard chef.

Day 2: Marseillan - Portiragnes

After breakfast this morning there will be a guided walk through the charming fishing village of Marseillan, ending with a tasting of Noilly Prat Vermouth which is distilled here. A seafood lunch on board is followed by a cruise through the Etang de Thau and onto the Canal du Midi. This conservation area, the 'Petit Camargue' is home to some unique species of birds, such as pink flamingos, African Rollers and Bee Eaters. The barge will moor in Portiragnes tonight and dinner will be served on board.

Day 3: Portiragnes - Fonserannes

A drive brings you to the market town of Pezenas this morning. The town is filled with an eclectic mix of artisan shops and your guide will make sure there is plenty of time for browsing at the end of your tour. A fascinating afternoon of cruising takes you over an 18th century canal bridge and up the 'Neuf Ecluses' or staircase locks, a 17th century feat of engineering. In the early evening you will arrive above the Fonserannes, the seven staircase locks at Beziers and from here you will have a magnificent view of the town. You may wish to enjoy a quick game of petanque with the crew before dinner back on the barge.

Day 4: Fonserannes - Capestang

After breakfast, enjoy some breathtaking views of the St Nazaire Cathedral from Fonserannes. After lunch, take a trip to the market town of Narbonne where you can wander the bustling streets and perhaps explore an excavated portion of the original Roman road, the Via Domitia and the Roman Museum. Dinner onboard. then make your way back to the boat for lunch and cruising. Enjoy some breathtaking views of the St Nazaire Cathedral from Fonserannes. Return to boat for evening cocktails and a gourmet dinner.

Day 5: Capestang - La Croisade

Today you can enjoy a wine tasting at a local chateau, such as Château Cabezac. You will then continue onto to La Croisade where you can enjoy a tasting of L’Oulibo”, the local olive oil press. After tasting those organic and wholesome olives accompanied by a glass of rosé, we take a short drive up the Gorge de la Cesse and into the hilltop village of Minerve. Your guide will regale you with the harrowing tale of the Cathar siege launched at Minerve during the 13th century.

Day 6: La Croisade - Argeliers

Enjoy breakfast on the upperdeck of the hotel barge before enjoying an excursion to the medieval city of Carcassonne. You will be taken on a guided tour of this beautifully preserved city, taking in all the key sights and attractions and some time for shopping. Return to the barge of a gourmet lunch.

Day 7 : Argeliers

Disembark the Athos after breakfast and bid farewell to the crew as you take a transfer back to the train station for your onward journey.


Disembark for a transfer to the designated drop-off point.
