Art de Vivre

Burgundy Cruise from Auxerre to Chevroches (7 Days)

Once a Scottish munitions carrier, the L’Art de Vivre was transformed into a charming 8-passenger luxury hotel barge. She is a noble ship owned by Count Florian Walewski, one of the pioneers of canal barging and a direct descendant of Napoleon, and has been in his family for decades. Today she cruises the magical waterways of Burgundy, a region where the appreciation of all that is good in life - whether it be cuisine, wines, or the land itself - still reigns.

You will be met at the designated meeting point in Paris and transferred to the barge moored in the heart of Auxerre where you will embark.

Day 1: Auxerre

Please note that this is a sample itinerary and may be subject to change. On alternate weeks, the cruise runs in the opposite direction. Meet in Paris for your transfer to the barge moored in the heart of Auxerre. Following a champagne welcome, you are free to explore free to explore or take a stroll along the banks of the River Yonne before returning for your first dinner aboard.

Day 2: Auxerre - Vincelles

The morning cruise takes you past vineyard-clad hillsides to a rural mooring at Vincelles. In the afternoon join an excursion to the caves of Arcy sur Cure, a complex of underground chambers carved by water from the limestone rock which are home to some of the oldest cave paintings known to man. Later you will visit the cellars of Bailly-Lapierre, to taste their sparkling Cremant de Bourgogne. Dinner on board.

Day 3: Vincelles - Mailly-la-Ville

After breakfast, there is an excursion to the medieval town of Auxerre. Once the capital of Lower Burgundy, the town prides itself on its fine churches and magnificent cathedral. Return to the barge for a cruise for a cruise past grazing Charolais cattle to the sleepy village of Mailly-la-Ville. After a relaxed lunch on board enjoy some leisure time perhaps taking a bicycle, walk or relaxing onboard.

Day 4: Mailly-la-Ville - Le Saussois

This morning, after a relaxing breakfast, head to the celebrated wine village of Chablis. After viewing the vineyards, we make a private visit to the prestigious Domaine Laroche for a wine-tasting, followed by a tour of the 1000 years old Obédiencerie. Lunch will be served by a private chef in the Domaine's dining hall. Later return to the barge and cruise past Le Saussois cliffs where an international climbing centre creates a particularly spectacular setting. You will also have the chance to enjoy some stunning walks before returning to the barge to take dinner on board.

Day 5: Le Saussois - Lucy-sur-Yonne

After a leisurely breakfast the barge will cruise is through the picturesque Yonne Valley to our mooring at Lucy-sur-Yonne. After lunch enjoy an excursion to the town of Vézelay, one of Burgundy’s most well-known treasures with the Romanesque Basilica of St Mary Magdalene, an array of craft shops and some magnificent views of the surrounding countryside. Dinner on board.

Day 6: Lucy-sur-Yonne - Chevroches
