Newfoundland
A land that lives by the sea in harmony with nature, Newfoundland is a rugged island on the eastern side of Canada. About the size of Ireland and a little smaller than Alaska, Texas or California, it was the place where the explorer John Cabot landed in 1497. It was later a British colony and became part of Canada only in 1949. Now the Canadian Province of Newfoundland and Labrador, the area is rich in history and natural beauty. The Gros Morne national park on the west coast is a UNESCO World Heritage site of stunning beauty and Terra Nova national park on the eastern side of the island includes the rugged Bonavista Bay. L'Anse aux Meadows at the northern tip of Newfoundland is a historical site that has been fully authenticated as a Viking settlement – the earliest evidence of Europeans living in North America.
